Most Bengaluru founders arrive with a different question from the one they ask out loud. It is not how to register for GST. It is whether to register yet. Put the two choices side by side. If your buyers are businesses that want input tax credit on your invoice, or you sell through an online marketplace, the GSTIN is part of the sale and waiting only costs you customers. If you supply consumers directly from one address and sit below the registration threshold, registering early buys you a return cycle and a state enrolment you did not have to carry yet. Most of our Bengaluru clients are in the first group. We say so plainly, and we say it when you are in the second.
What actually happens when a Bengaluru business registers late?
You cannot recover from a customer the tax you never charged them. Invoices raised before your registration date carry no GSTIN, so a corporate buyer in Whitefield or Koramangala will park your payment until you reissue, and some will not accept a reissue at all. That is the commercial consequence, and it arrives before any departmental one.
There is a state consequence too, and almost nobody flags it. Entry 2 of the Schedule to the Karnataka profession tax Act reaches anyone who is registered, and anyone who ought to be, under the Karnataka Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017. Those last four words do the damage. A business that crossed the line and stayed quiet is already inside the ₹2,500 a year net, and it owes an enrolment certificate whether or not a GSTIN was ever issued. Applying late for that certificate carries its own penalty under section 5(5): ₹500 for a person and ₹1,000 for an employer, after a hearing.
The tax and interest side of a late registration is national law, and we set it out in our complete GST Registration guide for India. This page covers the part that changes because your address is here.
Who is caught in Bengaluru, and at what point?
The registration threshold depends on whether you supply goods or services and on your category of state, and we confirm the current position before we file. Several categories must register whatever they turn over, so turnover is never our only test. These are the Bengaluru situations we see most.
- A product startup founder in HSR Layout signing a first enterprise customer, whose finance team will not raise a purchase order without a GSTIN on file.
- An IT services and BPM operator in Electronic City that exports, and needs the registration live before the first export invoice leaves.
- A consultant billing from Indiranagar whose retainers grew past the line quietly, with nobody watching the running total.
- A family trading business in Chickpet converting from proprietorship, where the registration has to follow the new entity and not the old PAN.
Which officer ends up with your file?
The state tax wing your file may land in is the Karnataka Commercial Taxes Department. Its own site is gst.karnataka.gov.in, and the same department carries profession tax through e-Prerana. A Bengaluru GST application is assigned to either a Karnataka state officer or a central officer, and either can raise clarifications and verify the principal place of business.
That verification power is the one that matters for the many Bengaluru companies working from a rented desk. Your address proof, your rent or licence document and the name on the utility bill have to agree with one another. A Karnataka GST registration number carries the state's own two digit code at the front, and we confirm the number the department issues you.
Here is how a Bengaluru filing actually runs.
- We settle eligibility, then list the documents your constitution and premises genuinely need.
- We build the principal place of business pack, which is where most Bengaluru applications come unstuck.
- The application goes in online, with the authorised signatory verified electronically.
- If a query comes back on the address, we answer it inside the window the notice gives.
- The number issues, and we move straight on to the state enrolment.
There is no counter to visit for any of it.
Which dates govern the year?
The state tax year opens on 1 April, and section 2(m) of the Karnataka profession tax Act fixes it there. Your GST return rhythm depends on whether you file monthly or sit in the quarterly group, and we confirm which applies before your first period closes. The state dates below are fixed by statute, and they are the ones Bengaluru businesses miss.
| Obligation | Who it falls on | When it is due |
|---|---|---|
| Application for the enrolment or registration certificate | Any business commencing a trade, calling or employment | Within thirty days of commencement |
| Enrolment tax for the year | A business already on the register when the year opens | On or before 30 April |
| Enrolment tax in a first year | A business enrolled part way through the year | Within one month of the date of enrolment |
| Monthly statement in Form 5-A | An employer holding a registration certificate | Within twenty days of the end of each month |
| Annual return in Form 5 | The same employer | Within sixty days of the end of the year |
The 30 April date has been extended by separate order in three of the last four years. Treat 30 April as the rule anyway. An extension granted for one year does not authorise the next one, and we check the current order before telling a client to wait.
What does GST registration cost here, and what sits inside the fee?
Our fee is ₹999. It buys work, not a form.
- The eligibility and threshold call, taken before anything is filed.
- Classification of your supplies, so the registration matches what you actually sell.
- The principal place of business pack for your Bengaluru address.
- The drafted reply if the officer queries that address.
The state enrolment that follows costs nothing at the department. A Government Order of 4 February 2025 directs that profession tax applications are accepted through the online portal only, and that no fee is payable on registration or enrolment. The same order says the certificate is downloaded from the portal and carries no seal or signature. Bengaluru clients ask about that last point most months, usually after a bank queried an unsigned certificate. The department instructed it that way.
How do the EC and the RC attach to a new Bengaluru GSTIN?
Two certificates, not one, and the state is precise about which is which. The EC is the enrolment certificate, taken for what the business itself owes. The RC is the registration certificate, taken by an employer for what it deducts from salaries. A Bengaluru company with staff carries both. A solo consultant carries the EC and nothing else.
Entry 2 charges ₹2,500 a year on anyone who holds a Karnataka GST registration, or who should hold one, and the old ₹20 lakh turnover line was deleted in 2023. You do not pay it twice over. Explanation I says that where more than one entry catches you, the tax falls due under any one of them, not under each. A Bengaluru company that is both a GST registrant and a Companies Act company therefore pays ₹2,500 once. Explanation V runs the other way on premises: every additional place of business counts as a separate person, so an office in Koramangala and a second one in Whitefield are ₹2,500 each. Premises kept purely as a godown for storing goods fall outside that rule.
On the payroll side the RC holder deducts ₹200 a month for eleven months and ₹300 for February, from any employee whose monthly salary or wage is ₹25,000 and above. That is ₹2,500 across the year, the constitutional ceiling. Since 1 April 2026 an enrolled person who has paid for the year is treated as having filed the return, but that relief leaves employers where they were. An RC holder still files monthly and annually. If a penalty is imposed under section 12 it is ten percent of the tax due, and it is on top of the interest payable under section 11.
What do we file besides the GSTIN itself?
We file GST registrations for Bengaluru businesses every week, and the state enrolment goes into the same engagement rather than being left for you to find a year later. The work is done by CAs and company secretaries who read the current Karnataka instruments, not a checklist written three amendments ago. Everything runs online. We tell you which of the two certificates you need before you pay for either, and we hold the dates above against your own financial year.
