Which office in Pune takes a copyright application? None of them. The Copyright Office is in New Delhi, under the Registrar of Copyrights, and the filing itself runs online, so a Kothrud coaching institute and a Kharadi delivery centre lodge the same application from their own desks. What is local is everything wrapped around that filing. Who owned the work when your staff or a freelancer made it, what your paperwork says about that, and which court you would walk into if somebody copies you.
What does a Pune business lose by leaving the work unregistered?
Copyright arises the moment an original work takes shape, so nobody has to register anything to own it. Ownership is not the problem. Proof on a bad day is the problem, when a former employee, a franchise partner or a reseller is quietly selling something that looks like yours.
A registration entry gives you a dated public record of the work and of the person who claimed it. Without one you are arguing from drafts, mail dates and an old hard disk. That argument gets expensive quickly. A copyright claim of the specified value is an enumerated commercial dispute under section 2(1)(c) of the Commercial Courts Act 2015, and the other side almost always attacks your chain of title before it argues about the copying.
The gap also shows up in deals. Licensing course material, selling a codebase or letting an investor into the company invites the same question about what you own and how you can show it.
How long does copyright registration take, stage by stage?
Our side of the work runs 5 to 7 days. The office keeps its own clock after that, and the waiting period is the part nobody can compress.
| Stage | What happens | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Category call | We fix the class of work and confirm who owns it | Day 1 |
| Document pack | Work copy, author identity, assignment or no objection where needed | Day 1 to Day 3 |
| Filing | Application lodged online and the diary number comes back | Day 3 to Day 5 |
| Waiting period | The file sits out the mandatory 30 day objection window | 30 days from filing |
| Examination | The office reads the file and raises queries if it has any | After the window closes |
| Registration | The entry is made and the certificate issues | On approval |
Treat the diary number as the useful date. It is issued long before the certificate and it is what a platform or a licensee will accept in the meantime.
What can a copyright cover in practice, and what it cannot?
- Literary works, which in Indian law take in source code, technical documentation, question banks, workbooks and written course material.
- Artistic works, meaning illustrations, packaging art, photographs, maps and architectural drawings.
- Musical works and sound recordings, from a jingle to a recorded lecture series or a podcast.
- Cinematograph films, which is where a video course, an advertising film or an edited show reel sits.
An idea itself is not covered, only the form you gave it. A name or a logo working as a badge of trade belongs to trade mark law, and for a Maharashtra applicant that filing goes to the Trade Marks Registry office at Mumbai. A machine or a process belongs to patent law, and Maharashtra sits in the jurisdiction of the Patent Office at Mumbai. All of them are filed online through the ipindia and Copyright Office systems, so the office decides hearings and objections, never where you lodge the papers.
What do you have to supply for the application?
One item decides most of the file: who made the work, and under what arrangement.
- A clean copy of the work in the form you want on record, with its title and the date it was first published or circulated.
- Identity proof for the author, and for the applicant as well where the two are different.
- A no objection or an assignment from the author when a company applies for something its people wrote.
- The position on any trade mark sitting inside the work, where the work was already put out under a brand.
For a Kharadi delivery centre that is usually straightforward, because work an employee produces in the course of employment ordinarily sits with the employer. A contractor is a different animal. A freelance developer, illustrator or editor keeps the copyright unless a written assignment moves it, so we check every contributor and paper the gaps before anything is lodged.
Where does a Pune application go, and who hears a dispute?
Pune has no intellectual property office of its own and none is needed, because the lodging is online. The local answer is about the courtroom, not the counter.
Maharashtra has specified the value under the Commercial Courts Act 2015 at ₹50,00,000 for the whole State, so the commercial track opens far higher here than the figure national pages quote. At Pune the Commercial Court for a dispute up to and including ₹1 crore is the Court of the Civil Judge, Senior Division. Above ₹1 crore it is the Court of District Judge-2. An appeal from the first lands in the Commercial Appellate Court, which Maharashtra has designated as District Judge-1 at the district headquarters. Only a decision of a Commercial Court at District Judge level travels on to the Commercial Appellate Division of the Bombay High Court, and both routes run on a sixty day clock.
Where the suit does not need urgent interim relief, section 12A sends you to pre institution mediation first, and for a Pune filing that is District Legal Services Authority machinery rather than a private mediator. Writs and supervisory matters from Pune district are heard by the Bombay High Court at its principal seat at Bombay. Which of the Pune district establishments hears a suit depends on where the cause of action arises, and 2026 office orders added a Civil Judge Senior Division court and a District Judge-1 court at Pimpri Chinchwad. That matters for Hinjawadi and Chakan businesses, because the commercial court designation attaches to those posts. We confirm the correct court before filing.
How we file copyright registration and follow it through
- A CA or CS on our team takes the work apart on a call and fixes its category, because one video course can be three separate works.
- We build the document pack and draft the no objection or the assignment, then get it signed before anything is lodged.
- We file online, capture the diary number and send it to you the day it is issued, so you hold a dated record while the window runs.
- We watch the window, answer any objection or examination query in writing, and tell you plainly when the office wants something we cannot supply.
- We hand over the registration certificate with a short note on using it in a takedown request or in a licence.
How are Pune businesses using copyright registration?
- A test prep and coaching institute at Kothrud registers its question banks, workbooks and recorded lecture series before it licenses the material to a franchise partner.
- An IT services and delivery centre at Kharadi registers the source code of an internal platform and pins the employment position in writing, so the client contract and the copyright record agree with each other.
Both of them come to us for the same reason. The work was already made, already sold and already sitting with three contributors, and nobody had written down who owned it. Registration forces that conversation to happen once, on paper, before it happens in a Pune courtroom.
Who handles your copyright filing end to end?
Our Pune office is at Yashwant Nagar, Near Bharatiya Samajseva, Yerwada, Pune 411006, and the CA and CS team handle the filing end to end. You never need to come in. Copyright registration is ₹6,999 for a single work and our part of it takes 5 to 7 days, with the office's waiting period after that. More than 15,000 businesses have used us. The person who drafts your assignment is the person who answers the objection, which is not how a call centre works. Ask for a callback within 30 minutes and we will tell you what your work actually needs before you pay for anything. The statute and the all India process sit in the national copyright registration guide.
