The document that decides a Pune IEC application is the address proof for the premises you name on it. DGFT reads that address against your PAN record and your bank details, and a mismatch is what stalls the file. Rented premises carry most Pune kitchens, offices and units, and the licence document behind them has to be a registered one. Section 55 of the Maharashtra Rent Control Act 1999 puts a leave and licence agreement into that compulsory class. Get the registered copy in hand first. Everything after that is data entry on a portal.
What has to be settled before you apply for an IEC?
Three things are settled off the portal, and getting them wrong costs a fresh application later. The first is whose PAN the code will sit against, because DGFT issues one IEC to one PAN and no more. A Koregaon Park cafe run as a proprietorship takes the proprietor's PAN, while the same kitchen run through a private limited company takes the company's PAN. The second is the bank account, which has to stand in the applicant's own name. The third is who will sign.
- The PAN, with the entity name spelled as the income tax record carries it rather than as your invoices carry it.
- A current account in the applicant's own name, with a cancelled cheque or a banker's certificate ready to upload.
- Address proof for the premises named, which for rented Pune premises means the registered leave and licence agreement.
- An authorised signatory with an Aadhaar linked mobile, or a valid digital signature token issued in the same name.
Who in Pune actually needs an IEC, and who does not?
The code follows the customs entry, not the ambition. If goods will cross the border in your business's name, the IEC has to exist before the consignment moves rather than after it lands.
- A Koregaon Park cafe bringing in green coffee, a roaster or an Italian espresso machine files the entry in its own name, so the code comes first.
- An auto component unit at Chakan shipping castings to an overseas buyer needs the code on the shipping bill and on the bank realisation.
- A software firm at Hinjawadi exporting services, and claiming no benefit under the Foreign Trade Policy, is not required to hold an IEC for that alone.
- Goods brought in for personal use, unconnected with trade, manufacture or agriculture, sit outside the requirement altogether.
Plenty of Pune service exporters take one anyway, because bankers and buyers ask for it out of habit, and because it is the entry ticket to a Foreign Trade Policy benefit later. That is a commercial choice and we will say so, rather than sell you a code you are not obliged to hold.
Which authority issues your IEC, and does your address answer to PMC or PCMC?
DGFT issues the code, and IEC and Foreign Trade Policy benefit applications from Pune route through DGFT's Regional Authority at Pune, which its own contact directory carries as a distinct office. We confirm the regional authority for your registered address before filing. The application runs online at dgft.gov.in and there is no counter anywhere in the process.
Your address still settles what sits around the code. Premises inside Pune Municipal Corporation limits answer to PMC, and premises inside Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits answer to PCMC. A Camp, Khadki or Dehu Road address is cantonment territory served by that board. Neither corporation's published area list carries Chakan, Talegaon or Hinjawadi. All three are MIDC notified industrial areas. We therefore read the body off your address itself and never off the pin code.
None of that changes the IEC itself, which is central. It changes the neighbours. A food importer needs an FSSAI category, a licensable trade raises the Schedule D question, and the Shops and Establishments filing goes to the state Labour Department's Facilitator rather than to the corporation.
What does an IEC cost, and what paperwork does it take?
Our fee is ₹1,999. DGFT charges its own application fee, paid online when the form is submitted, and nothing is payable at any office. The paperwork itself is short: PAN, the constitution document of the entity, address proof for the premises named, a cancelled cheque or banker's certificate, and identity details for the proprietor, partners or directors.
| Filing | Who takes it | Where it is done |
|---|---|---|
| IEC and its annual update | DGFT, through its Regional Authority at Pune | dgft.gov.in |
| LUT to export without paying IGST | your Maharashtra state or central GST officer | gst.gov.in |
| Shops and Establishments filing | the Facilitator under the state Labour Department | lms.mahaonline.gov.in |
| FSSAI licence for a food importer | FSSAI, in the central category | FoSCoS |
| Profession tax enrolment | the Maharashtra profession tax authorities | mahagst.gov.in |
A Maharashtra GSTIN begins with state code 27, and which officer holds your file, state or central, decides who processes an export refund later.
How we run an IEC filing from our side
- We match the PAN, the entity name, the address proof and the bank details against each other, and flag what will not survive scrutiny.
- We build the DGFT profile, enter your Pune premises as the address on record and attach the bank proof and the address proof.
- Your authorised signatory signs electronically with Aadhaar or a digital signature token, and we submit with the DGFT fee paid online.
- We download the certificate, draft the AD Code letter your banker will ask for, and brief your customs broker on what to quote.
- We diarise the annual update and the Maharashtra dates around it, so a filing does not lapse while a consignment is in transit.
How long does an IEC stay valid, and what does the annual update need?
An IEC carries no expiry date on its face, and that is precisely where Pune importers get caught. The code has to be updated online between April and June every year, even when not one detail has changed, and a code that is not updated is deactivated. Filing the update reactivates it, but a container sitting at a port while that is sorted out costs far more than the update ever would.
Two Maharashtra dates sit alongside. You choose how long your Shops and Establishments registration certificate should run, subject to a ten year ceiling, and renewal is applied for no later than thirty days ahead of expiry. PTEC is the other one. Companies, LLPs and GST registered persons in Maharashtra each pay ₹2,500 a year against their own Schedule I entry, on or before 31 March. Staff on the payroll bring in PTRC, a second certificate and a separate one.
What else do we check when filing your IEC?
We file IEC applications for Pune importers and exporters every month, and we file them with the neighbouring registrations in view rather than as a code on its own. Our Pune office is at Yashwant Nagar, Near Bharatiya Samajseva, Yerwada, Pune 411006. CA and CS support runs the file online from there, and a visit stays optional rather than expected. Pricing is fixed at ₹1,999, more than 15,000 businesses have used us, and a callback within 30 minutes reaches a person rather than a form. For the wider picture read how IEC registration works across India, then send us your address and your PAN.
